Background

V’Grette always wanted to be popular. Within the village, joining the guard was considered to be one of the highest achievements possible. V’Grette’s ultimate aim at a young age, due to his natural ambition, was to become chief, a position only given to the strongest warrior in the village. The chief of the village acts as the leader of the entire village, dictating when they go on missions, how the guard is organized and run, who gets to become a part of the guard, and how resources are divided.

Years ago, at a young age, a monster attack caused V’Grette’s family to be severely injured from a Krowlin attack. None of them died. However, V’Grette’s inability to assist them led to him having a severe amount of frustration and a deep sense of inadequacy. He vowed to become a stronger warrior in order to protect his family and the village, who he views as an extended family. His ultimate dream is to go on more aggressive missions outside of the village and learn more about the source of the monsters in order to prevent the village from being attacked. In pursuit of his goals, V’Grette began to train daily, sharpening his weapon skills and becoming especially proficient at archery.

When Jhe was brought to the village by Mushin, V’Grette was skeptical. He’d never seen a living being that was humanoid like Jhe but had deep black eyes like a monster. While initially, he thought to befriend Jhe, he remembered the damage done to him and his family by the monster attacks.

Additionally, V’Grette has a (not so subtle) crush on Karina. However, he suspects that Jhe is using some kind of trick to lure her away from the village, as he often catches her walking in the direction of Jhe’s cabin (where Jhe is isolated from the village in a forested section). He’s extremely protective of her, and this adds to his disdain for Jhe.

Plot

When we first meet V’Grette, he’s on duty as the archer and observer of the village, in which he takes shifts with Papri to stay on the lookout for incoming monster attacks or suspicious activity or attack from within the walls with a Sprayfire–A device created that, when a cable attached to a handle is pulled, quickly fires large javelins in one direction at an incoming enemy. The attack is typically enough to outright kill most approaching creatures.
We see V’Grette attempting to flirt with Karina, often suspicious of her connection to Jhe.
SPOILERS

Eventually, after Jhe and Karina leave the village, the guards face moments of intense conflict, both within the village and from external threats. And with Jhe out of the village, their combat strength is severely crippled. As time proceeds, the village seems to continuously have conflicts, typically in minor things such as petty squabbles over food or resources. However, monster attacks, while manageable, become more dangerous. While there are no casualties from these attacks, injuries increase and morale drops.
One day, catching the village off guard, S’Oaur returns with Gran (Lord of the Woods) as well as other smaller monsters. They launch an ambush and a major battle erupts. Initially, V’Grette and the other guards manage to take out an immense number of the weaker monsters. However, they begin to fail due to the sheer numbers. As the battle intensifies, V’Grette finds himself separated from Salza and the others. In an attempt to get to his home to see if his parents and siblings to protect them, V’Grette is cornered alongside Mayoni who chased after him to stop him. V’Grette is ultimately killed by several monsters attacking him at once, leading to him being devoured by the group of creatures.
